ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Social media platforms now serve as an informal yet influential place to access information where patients share experiences with neuromodulation therapies, ask questions, and seek advice from peers. In this study, we identify Reddit users' most asked questions and insights about intrathecal drug therapy (IDT) for chronic pain disorders using Reddit data bases.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a qualitative analysis of public anonymous threads and comments from targeted subreddits within the Reddit platform. We used the Python Reddit API Wrapper to extract relevant data. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied, using three manual reviewers to identify and categorize common queries, experiences, and opinions shared by patients regarding IDT.

RESULTS: A total of 311 threads and 954 comments were analyzed. Most threads (72.3%) were user questions, whereas most comments (85.1%) shared experiences or information. Question threads were primarily neutral in tone (69.8%) and focused on treatments and outcomes, often from users considering or reflecting on their experiences. Commentary threads were more positive (37.2%) and frequently described postimplant relief, surgical recovery, or device management. Comments were largely neutral (46.4%), followed by positive (42.3%) and negative (11.2%), with most written from a postimplant perspective. Taken together, perioperative pain expectations, administrative and logistic aspects of living with an intrathecal pump, and appropriate contextualization of granuloma risk should be central to initial counseling, with more advanced discussions prioritized for long-term therapy management.

CONCLUSIONS: Reddit discussions on IDT underscore the importance of addressing patient expectations around pain relief, potential complications, and long-term management during clinical encounters. Social media platforms such as Reddit provide valuable insight into the lived experiences and informational needs of patients using neuromodulation therapies.
